The hashtag #GrammysSoMale has been trending on Twitter after Sunday night's 60th Annual Grammy Awards, where out of the nine televised major awards only one was given to a woman-- 21-year-old Alessia Cara for best new solo artist.

"It has to begin with women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level-- to step up," Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said following the ceremony, according toVariety.

Bruno Marsswept the board with the awards for Song, Record, and Album of the Year, whileEd Sheeran's win for best pop solo performance was met with boos from the audience after the British singer, who was not present to accept the award, defeated Kesha, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, and Pink.

When asked if it was mistake not to invite Lorde, the only female nominated for Album of the Year, to perform, as male nominees had during the show, Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich said, "I don't know if it was a mistake. These shows are a matter of choices. We have a box and it gets full. She had a great album. There's no way we can really deal with everybody."

Lorde was one of many artists who showed their support for the Time's Up initiative and the #MeToo movement, asLady Gaga,Cardi B,Camila CabelloandJanelle Monewore or held white roses in solidarity.
