Sony's TriStar Pictures wins rights to Zendaya's 'A White Lie'

Sony's TriStar Pictures has won in a competitive battle for the rights toA White Lie a psychological thriller produced by and starring Zendaya. The project is based onKarin Tanabe's novelThe Gilded Years.

The Gilded Years tells the true story of Anita Hemmings, a light-skinned, African-American woman and descendant of slaves. Hemmings passed as white so she could attend Vassar during the turn of the twentieth century. From there, she's pulled into the elite world, where she's treated as a wealthy, educated white woman who finds romance with a moneyed Harvard student.

Fargo writer and producer Monica Beletsky will write the script for the film. Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine production company partner Lauren Neustadter will produce the feature film alongside Zendaya.

"Monica, Zendaya, Lauren and Reese have developed a bold and original approach to Anita's story that explores complex and timely themes in a way that is sure to thrill audiences," said TriStar president Hannah Minghella, who will oversee the project with Nicole Brown.

Zendaya recently starredopposite Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron in Fox's The Greatest Showman as trapeze artist Anne Wheeler, and as Mary Jane opposite Tom Hollandin Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming. She also starred in and produced her seriesK.C. Undercover on Disney Channel, which wrapped its third season last year.
